Dead Tree Valley - Kayak & Birdwatching in wetland area caused by the biggest world earthquake 1960.

The Dead Tree Valley was caused after the biggest world earthquake ever registered at the South of Chile. The terrain lowered for about 2 meters (6 feet) and a big Tsunami entered Chepu River devastating thousands of trees. Today an overwhelming view and nesting place of birds, Flora & Fauna .

Kayaking at Chepu wetlands is a great experience as you go with your kayak alone in an area full of dead trees (Valley of Dead Trees) and Sunken Forest and with high tide you can get into many small channels and this absolutely gives you the idea of being transported in time. Kayak is so quite that you can get real close to amazingly large birds standing in the dead trees and they do not fly away. I was given some tips on how to use low and high tides in my favor to help me move faster with less effort. This way you can be out in the river, wetlands and dead trees for many hours without really feeling tired.

Chepu is a small and quiet community located between a wetland area and the Pacific Ocean alongside a long, quiet river. In 1960, the biggest Tsunami ever registered hit the coast and caused a major flooding. It left sunken forests & thousands of dead trees in the middle of the valley, still flooded with water. It is a peaceful and unique landscape, nesting place of many birds, and you can realize of how nature starts all over again after a great disaster. Great variety of local fauna and flora.

MIRADOR DE CHEPU is the place to contact and to arrive as they rent kayaks, offer private transportation and arrange and coordinate most of the activities in the area: Trekking by Sendero de Chile - Boat Tours - Hospedaje Rural - NEW Eco-Camping with small cabins and Bunk beds available in case is too rainy or windy to set up your tent, Hot Showers by Solar Energy.

This place has a great view over the dead tree valley, the wetland & rivers. Amory & Fernando are ready to guide you in this unique experience.

Chepu is a wild area attractive for every person who likes nature & outdoors activities. By staying overnight, you will be able to discover much more the area that offers spectacular landscapes.

OTHER ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE: Camping: allowed for early kayaking - Kayak at Dawn(I do recommend) Trekking: from a day walk to discover the beach or the native forest to a trek of 3 days to explore the adventurous Senderos de Chile.
